Elephants are the largest land animals alive today. There are 3 species of elephants: the Asian (or Indian) Elephant, the African Brush Elephant, and the African Forest Elephant. Until recently, the 2 African species were not recognized as separate species, and simply known collectively as the "African Elephant." In 1978, at the Chester Zoo in the United Kingdom, an Asian Elephant gave birth to a baby that was fathered by an African Elephant. The baby, named "Motty" was a miracle because it was thought impossible to breed two animals from different species. Motty had characteristics of both his mother and father.
