hippos

Hippos are gregarious, living in groups of up to 40 animals, called a pod, herd, school or bloat. A hippo's lifespan is typically 40 to 50 years.

The eyes, ears, and nostrils of the hippo rest high on the top of his skull. This allows him to spend most of his day with the majority of his body submerged in the waters of tropical rivers to stay cool and prevent sunburn.

For one of those oh so charming inter-species stories click here to read about Owen and Mzee. This hippo and tortoise have formed a unique bond of friendship, even working out their own unique vocal communication.
