Flamingos

Flamingos are quite unusual birds. Their long legs and necks make them somewhat of the giraffe of the bird world. When Flamingos are sleeping, they balance themselves on only one of their long, bony legs in order to control the amount of body heat that escapes into the water. Have you ever wondered where Flamingos get their hot pink coloring from? Well, the pinker the Flamingo, the more healthy it is. This is because they get their coloring from the large amounts of shrimp they eat. Shrimp contain a pigment called carotene, which is also the reason for the orange color in carrots, and this is what makes Flamingos pink!
